Letter from Secretary of State Kate Brown

Dear Oregonian,

It is with great pleasure that I provide you with the online 2010 State Candidate's Manual: Major Political Party. Oregon continually strives to open its elections system to the broadest citizen participation possible. For individuals interested in running for a partisan elective office, this manual will provide you with the filing requirements and other information for a major political party candidate and will also review the rights and responsibilities of candidates and campaign committees.

The information in this manual is presented for you in three parts. The first part will outline the process for filing for office by declaration, the second part reviews the procedure for a candidate to file by petition; and the last part is general information for all state major political party candidates, including definitions of terms used throughout the manual.

A companion Campaign Finance Manual also available online will provide you with the requirements and laws that you as a candidate will need to adhere to when filing campaign finance information using our ORESTAR filing system. We encourage all candidates participating in the upcoming 2010 Primary or General election to carefully study both of these publications.

Contact your county elections official or the Elections Division of the Secretary of State for assistance in filing for candidacy.

Best,

Kate Brown
Secretary of State
