Controlling the Cost of Health Care
Kate pushed to create a lower-cost basic health benefits package for small businesses so more working Oregonians have access to health care. (HB 2537, 2003)
As Democratic Leader, Kate fought for the creation of Oregon's Senior Prescription Drug Assistance Program giving low-income seniors discounts on their medications. (SB 9, 2001)
And she'll push to make health insurers and HMO's hold public hearings and go before the Insurance Commissioner before increasing rates.
Creating Local Jobs and Higher Wages
Kate wrote the law requiring preferential bidding for Oregon companies making Oregon license plates, giving a local company a chance to bring back the State's business from Canada. (SB 899, 2003)
Kate sponsored and passed a bill requiring the State to invest in Oregon Venture Capital firms to create new businesses, particularly in the high paying technology industry. (HB 3613, 2003)
Fighting for us
Kate passed a bill allowing families of victims of violent crime to use unpaid leave to attend related court hearings without fear of losing their jobs. (SB 610, 2003)
Kate will always protect a woman's right to choose.
Supporting our Schools
Kate will make sure our schools prepare kids for college but also provide vocational and technical training and other skills for those not going on to college.
And Kate will continue to fight for adequate funding for schools, and make sure that dollars go to the classroom.
